Side by Side Cymru: Peer support in your community

Ochr-yn-Ochr Cymru: Cymorth gan Gymheiriaid yn Eich Cymuned

For many of us attending arts and craft, sport or self-help groups can make a big difference to our lives – even a something as simple as a regular coffee morning can be a real lifeline.

Groups can be great for linking up with people who’ve had similar experiences to our own – and this can really boost our mental health. We call this peer support.

I lawer ohonon ni gall celf a chrefft, chwaraeon neu grwpiau hunangymorth wneud gwahaniaeth mawr i'n bywydau – gall rhywbeth mor syml â bore coffi rheolaidd hyd yn oed helpu.

Gall grwpiau fod yn ffordd wych o gysylltu â phobl sydd wedi cael profiadau tebyg i ni – a gall hyn roi hwb go iawn i'n hiechyd meddwl. Rydyn ni'n galw hyn yn gymorth gan gymheiriaid.

Free training and grants

If you’re part of an organisation or community group that offers peer support – or are thinking about starting a group – we can help you get started.

Thanks to support from Wales Government and Mind Cymru, we’re running a series of free training and networking sessions where you can see how others have successfully run groups. You’ll also be able to find support from others in your area.

We’re also offering small grants to help you get started. This money could be used for things like venue hire, leaflets, materials for activities, amongst many other things.

Who can take part?

  • Anyone involved in running a community group where peer support takes place.
  • Anyone who is interested in setting up a peer support group.
  • Organisations who want to support people to run a peer support group.
  • Your organisation or group must be in Newport or Monmouthshire local authority areas.
